How Cancer Persists
Stem cells are found in numerous tissues in the body, its life span is limited unlike with all other regular cells. They have the ability of dividing and renovate themselves for long time period. There unspecialized character justifies that ensuring cells convert into different cell type on time when one cell divides. Like, stem cells inside the bone marrow have ability of becoming bone. Likewise, there is believed that cancer stem cell is present in the main part of tumour, in the other hand there growth is also undefined and ability of self-renovate till they convert into new cancer cells. The major tumours treatment leaves cancer stem cell unmarked. Cancer stem cell can move undetectably even after treatment of major tumours effectively to the blood stream by the immune system to generate new tumours. This process is known as metastasis.
These minor tumours become more aggressive year after and it’s really difficult to treat them.
There are some of the major challenges for targeting cancer cells such as - at present no clinically verified drugs are directed at cancer stem cells. Scientists believe that removing renewable source of cancer cells kills cancer stem cells as well as prevents genesis of new cancers.
Finding cancer stem cell and killing them before is the big challenge. Detecting cancer stem cells is too hard, due to limited approaches for identifying these cells.
Researchers said by attaching a toxic agent to the ligand and thus binding selectively as well as killing cancer stem cells would be the easiest way of treatment. On the other hand it would be beneficial for imaging agent to adapt these ligands. This would be best option for treatment in patients
